The Documentation and information department carries on with the activities of the Music Information Centre, which worked as a part of the Music Fund since 1964. As a part of transformation that the music culture went through in 2000, it was transferred, together with its archives and documentation funds, under the Music Centre, where the scope of its activities was broadened to include also further documentation and providing information on contemporary Slovak music culture.

Nowadays, the Department gathers and processes documentation and information on music life in our country, builds up a database of Slovak composers and classical music pieces, of personalities working in the field of jazz as well as other music genres and a database of concert artists, musicologists and music events of all styles in Slovakia.

Another key activity of the department involves elaboration of information brochures and books: calendar of Music Events in Slovakia, Slovak Music Directory and the Akcent newsletter (in Slovak and English; only in English since 2004). The documentation activities of the department gave rise to the project of Dictionary of Slovak Concert Art, the first volume of which came out in 2002, focusing on keyboard music. The next volume, to appear in 2003, will be looking into the art of string instruments. Among the thematic dictionaries published was also the Book of Slovak Jazz (Kajanová, Yvetta, National Music Centre 1998, English version 2000), soon to be followed by the Book of Slovak Blues.

Last but not least, the Department also runs the music study room providing access to musicology literature and music magazines, to databases, audio and video library, to the archive of sheet music and scores of Slovak composers and to documentation material.
